The problem with deviantArt Part 1: Points & the Commission Widget

junktastic:

To start out, let me introduce myself. My name is JUNK and, despite what my current deviantArt account says, I have been using and browsing deviantArt for almost a decade now. I have been there through multiple mod changes and many, many unfortunate changes to the rules.

While there is quite a history, I am going to start out these series of posts with something fairly recent: the Points System and their flashy new Commission Widget. DeviantArt is a for-profit website, and it obviously costs a lot of money to run a website and community as large as the one dA boasts. However, the extent to which they’re willing to dupe you out of your money shows exactly what they want out of their users.

This is a wonderful article that I have seen on my dash a few times.

Frankly it is stuff like this that keeps me away from DA a lot.

On a lighter note - ever get people faving your old work? Ever get people faving your old work which you HONESTLY forgot eve existed?

Ever had people faving your old work which you honestly forgot ever existed because you were so embarrassed at how bad it was?

Thanks DA. Thanks a fucking lot.

I’m in pain from reading this.

DeviantArt, everyone.

The difference is Michelangelo told his assistants to use his cartoons to transfer the art onto the ceiling so he could paint it because he was (probably) paying them. The difference is his assistants didn’t take the stuff they “traced” and say they drew it and sell it for profit. The difference is tracing is okay as a learning tool, not to be used to post it on your site and say “LOOK WHAT I DID, I AM SO FUCKING AWESOME.” I used to trace when I was ten. There is nothing creative about it. But because I traced, it spurred me to get moving to where I am now. Because tracing is a learning tool. If you want to post art on the internet, stop tracing and start drawing.

Am— I mean am I deluded, or reading this wrong, or— or is DA really this ignorant?

Honestly, I have NEVER supported DeviantArt supporting tracing. As soon as I heard about it I think the site finally lost all respect for me as a community. Actually, I think they have opened themselves up for a big fall with this. What happens if an artist decides “oh, going to copy the Mona Lisa and make it my own. UB”, and it becomes popular? What if they start selling it? There would be riots, I swear. Both from people saying that this is an outrage and, of course, the supporters of the artist who think that this is all for a just reason. Then the legal actions shall open it’s doors and… well. :/ One way or another there will be a point where they’ll be forced to say “no” and probably take down a submission.

There is nothing legitimate about tracing. Even as a kid I didn’t like it. Yes, it helps you learn and it does help you grow, no question about that. But for a once respected artistic community to finally say “yes, everyone can trace and submit it and potentially make a profit out of it with our print system”? That really gets my blood boiling and my eyes rolling.

Oh and don’t get me started on the pornographic photo-shoots. Seriously. Just… :l;;;;

I agree with everything you said and more. But since I get some kind of sick satisfaction out of paying Devil’s Advocate, one thing you said made me think of this piece. This is Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q, which is an acronym for a French title that basically says “She has a nice ass” or something of that nature, done in 1919. It’s a post card of the Mona Lisa, with a mustache drawn on with a pencil. It was on display in national art museums and Duchamp was a world-renowned 20th century artist. Then again he didn’t exactly COPY the Mona Lisa, he took a copy of the Mona Lisa and drew on it. It’s not illegal because copies of the Mona Lisa I think are considered public domain, as the artist has been dead for however-long the law states. However, Duchamp’s ready-made became popular because of the statement he was making— he was a little more intellectual (or so critics were made to think) about what he was doing than your average 10-year-old anime weeaboo would be.

HOWEVER, that doesn’t make any 13-year-old’s trace of the Mona Lisa or other classics worthy art, you’re definitely right. It just goes to show that the art world is a strange place and there are thin, thin invisible lines between what Is and Isn’t art.

Still shouldn’t trace though. :I

TLDR; I agree with you, but on the other hand LOL ART.

Oh god I laughed seeing that. :’D

But yes. There are so many situations in art where people have taken already famous pieces and altered them for their own statements and views and what-not. The line starts getting thinner and thinner the closer you look at it I feel. That and I remember my art teacher once say that nothing is really original, you either consciously or subconsciously take inspiration and copy things you’ve already seen, be it on paper or in film or whatever have you. But that’s more in the realm of inspiration and less of a “I SHALL USE DIS AND BE ON DA FRONT PAGE” mindset.

…I have no idea what I’m trying to say but yeah. “LOL ART” really does sum it up nicely. :’D

Go to bed with 20 people faving that Gamzee picture…

Wake up to see that I’ve got almost 100 faves on the thing.

……………………………………………………………..

Granted it’s probably because it’s now in a group BUT STILL? D: THAT’S INSANE.

DeviantArt Blahs

Look through my watched artists and there’s a really good image with only 50 faves.

Then go to the front page and see some bullshit about Voldemort keeping Harry as a pet/slave with almost 4,000 faves.
